Little Island Aikikai

Some of the Little Island Aikikai members attended an Aikido seminar at UVic last weekend.

Several members will be testing for a new rank on Dec. 15th. Guest instructors and high level black belts have been invited to Thetis that same day as examiners and for our first ever on-islnad Aikido workshop.  The community is welcome to attend.  Testing is 9:30-10:30AM, workshops 10:50-1:00PM, followed by a light lunch for participants. Thanks from the Thetis Island Community Fund...

The Thetis Island Community Fund Volunteer Board would like to thank all of you who supported our Annual October Fund Raising Campaign.

As of November 12th, close to $6,500 has been raised. This money supports many initiatives which improve the quality of life here on beautiful little Thetis Island. Contributions to the fund support:  a wide variety of educational initiatives, yoga, aikido, Food Safe training, Thetis Island School programs as well as scholarships.

We support medical care and treatment such as our recent flu clinic as well as the new x ray machine at Chemanius Hospital.  The Community Fund also provides support services for our seniors AND contributes to other charitable organizations that benefit Thetis Islanders such as the Thetis Island Community Associationn through a joint fundraiser.

Even though our official Fund raising campaign is over, we welcome contributions all year long – it’s not too late to make your contribution because every little bit makes a difference.  You can make a financial contribution three ways, by cheque to the Thetis Island Community Fund, P.O. Box 12-14, Thetis Island, B.C., VOR 2YO, or if you donate annually to the United Way, please designate `Thetis Island Community Fund` on your United Way Form. Or, donate online through our website using the security and convenience of PayPal by clicking here

Thetis Kora ~ December 2nd

Click here to view poster in a larger format.

You are invited to attend an exhibition and reception of  collaborative art project Thetis Kora on Sunday December 2  from 3 to 5 pm Forbes Hall. There will be an artist’s talk at 3:30 in conjunction with the exhibit.

Earlier this year a group of women on Thetis gathered together to embark on an art action project the goal of which was to celebrate the earth, women and the interconnectedness of all life. The end goal of the project was to create an artwork which embodied both our concern about the current erosion of environmental and social policies and our passion for this planet and life. The installation of art works and the accompanying artists book (which expands about 21 feet long) will be on display for the community to view. We welcome all. Refreshments provided.

Ferry Consultation Meeting well attended ~

Thank you all who came out to the Open House on BC Ferries last night at Forbes Hall.  We had about 65 people sign in, and maybe a couple more that we missed.  So a good turn out by any standards.  The Q&A session went from about 6:15 to 8:05, and was a very lively discussion with many great points made and questions asked by our local residents of the government.  Representing the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure was Kirk Handrahan, Executive Director Marine Branch, along with two assistants.  Judy Kirk of Kirk & Co. facilitated the discussion.  Judy had two assistants as well, who were recording the proceedings and collecting feedback forms.  MLA Doug Routley was also in attendance with his assistant Patty.  He had a number of interesting things to say about ferries and in particular his commitment on behalf of the NDP (if they are elected) to increase government contributions to ferries in order to increase or sustain service, to freeze or reduce fares, and a promise to build ships in BC.

For those of you who took the Feedback Forms home with you, please mail them to:

PO Box 2223 Vancouver Main, Vancouver, BC V6B 3W2

Or email

Or click here to fill out the feedback form online.

If you would like to talk to someone, phone: 1-855-387-7882

A comment on that…all submissions will be processed, whether you tick all the correct boxes or not…comments are greatly encouraged and written submissions even more so.  As an example I will be sending my introductory comments in as a written submission.

Thanks again Thetis Island,

Keith Rush
