Weekend Fire Weather Outlook
OUTLOOK: Friday sees the unstable southerly flow continue bringing another threat of afternoon convective development mostly for the eastern sections of Pemberton and Fraser. But also the temperatures will be a little cooler, humidity higher and there is a much better chance of shower activity.
For the Gulf Islands there is a 30% chance of showers Friday morning (70% chance we won’t get any precipitation) and a risk of thunderstorms. Clearing in late afternoon, then back to drier weather for the long weekend.

Forbes Hall Expansion Update: Committees
Looking forward. Moving forward.
As the Forbes Hall Expansion moves into the next phase of construction, new committees are being struck to see the Expansion through to completion and beyond.
Communication and Engagement Committee
The Communication and Engagement Committee (CEC) was formed in May to develop a Communication and Engagement plan to support the Forbes Hall Expansion Project and to encourage Community participation.
The function of the committee is to gather and communicate accurate and relevant information in a timely manner to all stakeholders through Public & Membership postings. The committee is also tasked with strategizing and creating opportunities for community interaction regarding the project.
The Committee consists of members Ann Dickie, Teresa Moore, Tatiana Nemchin Ellen Rush and Don Sinclair.
New Committees
New committees are being formed to meet present and future planning needs in preparation for when the new hall opens and when we will be able to gather there once again.
The Fund Development Committee (FDC) is currently seeking members to support fund development efforts. Experience with grant writing or commercial lending would be helpful, but not necessary.
Should you be interested in joining the Fund Development Committee please contact Carolyn Askew at 1-604-209-4939.
Information about new committee opportunities will be announced on e-spokes, thetisposts.ca, and Thetis Island Community Posts FB Page.
If participating on a Committee and sharing your skills and passion calls to you please e-mail: hall@thetisisland.net to learn more.
Propane Campfire Appliance Season Now
It’s propane campfire appliance season starting August 1st. No solid fuel campfire (wood, briquettes etc) permits will be given out. Compared to last year, we had more than six extra weeks of MODERATE Hazard before we shot up to HIGH Hazard last week.
HIGH Hazard means all high risk activities with spark-producing equipment in or near the forest or grasses must be completed before 11 a.m. and a two-hour fire watch posted. Mowing, bucking, sawing, chipping etc. are restricted to morning hours.
When we move up to EXTREME Fire Hazard, and that will be very soon, ALL high risk activities must cease until the Fire Danger Rating drops.
At this time no fireworks, rockets, tiki torches, sky lanterns etc. are permitted. No smoking allowed on community trails, the school grounds or cemetery. It is a criminal offence to discard or eject burning materials on roadways (I.e. tossing cigarette butts).
Let’s get through the next two hot, dry months fire-free.

Theft of Paddles - July 23
I read the note in espokes today about the theft and felt I should also pass along that our two kayak paddles were stolen while camping on the morning of July 23. We did not file a police report.
They were secured with our lifejackets and kayaks above the waterline in a spot not visible to any campers. Someone removed the lifejackets to take the paddles. We checked with other campers and fortunately none had anything stolen but we worried for the part time residents on the island.
Thetis is a most special place for us so this was disappointing.

Thetis Island Community Services Youth Program
Placements available for Thetis Island Community Services Youth Program
Thetis Island Nature Conservancy has applied for a grant from Work BC under the BC Youth Community Partnership stream, to engage youth 15-29 years of age in community services projects on Thetis Island. The grant, along with support from the Thetis Island Community Fund, will be used for the Thetis Island Community Services Youth Program, a partnership between ThINC, the Thetis Island Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association (TIRRA) and the Thetis Island Community Farm Co-operative (Farm Co-op), to engage youth in community service projects that address food security, waste management, trail maintenance, and environmental restoration.
Parts of the program will build on ThINC's summer food security initiative which has been funded by Canada Summer Jobs, the Community Fund, TIRRA and the Stewart Fund until July 31. The Thetis Island Community Services Youth Program is designed to provide participants with a wide range of skills, knowledge, and experience in local organic food production and community sustainability.
The program will run for approximately 30 hrs a week starting as early as August 4 and ending on October 31. Each participant will receive up to a $2000 stipend for each 4 weeks of participation. Participants will work and learn as a cohort of up to 4 youth and will be trained and supervised by members of the three partner organizations. Participants must have secure housing and be available until the end of October.
Please note that this opportunity is dependent on funding. If you are interested in participating please contact ThINC@thetisisland.net with a cover letter and CV.
