On International Belly Dance Day, May 10th, 2014, some of Thetis Island’s very own Gypsy Dancers of the Salish Sea, led by Halaki (Char Aaberg) took part in an International Shimmy Mob. The Shimmy Mobs danced to promote public awareness of Belly Dance as a Performing Art and to raise funds for women’s shelters. We danced at the pub after the regatta for a great audience of community members and visiting sailors, raised over $700 for the Cowichan Women Against Violence Society (Duncan, BC), and had a lot of fun dancing for our cause! Thank you to all our sponsors, volunteers, donors and a great audience who cheered us on with gusto!

Special thanks to Paul Deacon for providing rehearsal and performance space and to Peter Luckham for videotaping our performance.
