Despite the small relief we are getting from the rain overnight, the open burn ban continues Province -wide and will not be rescinded until sometime in October. This means that there will be NO yard waste burn piles, incinerators, trash fires, or other open flame fires outdoors other than small campfires with a valid permit in place, for the time being. A campfire is NOT a burn pile.
If someone is in doubt as to what a campfire is, please call the Duty Officer at 250-252-0228 and he will explain the regulations.
If you see smoke during the daytime, please report it to 911 and the fire department will investigate. We do not want abandoned fires to flare up days or weeks later for disastrous results.
Campfire permits are available in advance by calling the TIVFD Permit Pager between 9 am and 5 pm at 250-715-9131 and leaving your number so that the Duty Officer can call you, or online at www.thetisislandfire.ca and following the Burn Permit links.
Please keep all of us safe by following the rules. No yard waste burns till the fall, and campfires only until we have to close down due to even drier conditions. Watch the Hazard Board at the ferry dock for information.
