Anchorages Concern Thetis, a concerned group of Thetis Islanders, is holding a public meeting on Tuesday August 8th at 1:00 pm to discuss the increase of freighters anchored beside our island. The upcoming hearings for the Oceans Protection Plan give the opportunity for our island input into where freighters should and should not anchor while waiting to enter the Port of Vancouver.
We will review how and why freighters anchor off Thetis and discuss opportunities to move these anchorages away from Trincomali Channel.
The social and environmental impacts of these large freighters are a concern for all of us. While the folks on the east water side of the island bear the brunt of all night generator noise and ship lights, the impact to the sea bed environment and it's effect on fish habitats should concern us all. Every boater in the world famous Trincomali Channel needs to be concerned about the safety impact of these behemoths on sailboats, kayakers, and canoeists. If you like catching rockfish you will want to be at the meeting.
We urge everyone who lives on, owns property on, or is just visiting Thetis Island to come out for what promises to be a lively and informative presentation. Find out what you can do to help.
