The Thetis Island Parents Association (TIPA) is a small group of 12 families with children attending Thetis Elementary school. The majority of funding that we raise to support our little school comes from a long established returnable bottles program. The program is run in cooperation with TIRRA's waste transfer facility.
Most of the time, contributors follow our simple sorting guidelines (more or less). But sometimes, garbage, broken glass, even soiled diapers are added to our bins. This gets tricky for us and is kind of gross! Other times, large boxes or bags of waste or recyclables are left at our returnables depot, which clutter the space and get soggy in the rain, creating more work.
School families are grateful for the community support and cooperation that makes our refundable program successful. With an estimated 150,000 containers going through our system per year, the cumulative extra sorting time for the families at the receiving end adds up to A LOT!
This message is a friendly reminder that our program is based on mutual benefit - meaning we all need to do our part for the system to work. We thank you for your continued support and ask you to place only recyclable bottles in our containers and refrain from leaving materials outside the labelled receptacles.
