Fire Permits Required

Fire Permits are now required for any outdoor fires (yard waste, campfires, incinerators) - starting April 1st.  Permit applications are available on-line at www.thetisislandfire.ca and follow the link to the form.  Please allow at least 24 hours for your application to be processed, so plan ahead. Even with a permit in place, yard waste fires must follow the Venting Index for Smoke control. An easy, interactive map link giving you a YES or NO for the Venting Index that day is posted just below the Hazard Sign on the Fire Dept. home page.

Some people are ignoring the Provincial Regulations and are igniting their yard waste fires on "NO" days of POOR or FAIR venting for this area.  Not only does this cause local smoke pollution of your neighbours, others on Vancouver Island can see the smoke and will check the Venting Index, and then complain to the CVRD about air shed pollution.  We are trying very hard to not lose our ability to have outdoor burning on Thetis Island while the rest of the CVRD is under severely restricted regulations for backyard burns.  If everyone here burns responsibly by following the Smoke Control Regulations we may avoid losing outdoor burning altogether.

There will be a fire department member at Soups On on Wednesday if you want a Fire Permit in person.
