There has been some tree cutting taking place at St.Margarets Cemetery.
It has become clear this spring that many of the cedars in the cemetery were dead or dying. The effects of hotter drier summers and the powder post beetle are taking their toll on cedars throughout the Southern Vancouver Island area. A decision was made to take then down before we continue with development of the new green cemetery and other remediation work being done on the bank and within the old cemetery.
It should also be made known that sadly, the large stand of old cedars right at the entrance to the cemetery are dying. These too will be brought down. All of these measures open new opportunities for things like green burials and reforesting.
It is also in the long term interest of the cemetery. I am interested to hear from anyone who is familiar with making split cedar rails for fencing. Call Suzanne 250-246-9965.
