Open Burning category 2 and 3 fires can commence OCTOBER 1st on Thetis Island WITH PERMIT. After October 31st, no permits for campfires or yard waste are necessary until next year.
You can apply for your OCTOBER yard waste permit now on-line at http://thetisislandfire.ca/ but only small evening campfires are permitted until the end of September. Those wishing October campfire permits whom have not already obtained a September permit, can apply now. Those already holding a campfire permit for September are already on-file and we will extend your permit automatically to October 31st starting September 20th.
During October, and all of the following months, it will be your responsibility to check the VENTING INDEX for the day you wish to ignite your open burn pile, and to follow all Provincial regulations that prohibit construction waste, tires, garbage, plastic, paint burning etc.

The Ministry of Environment sets the VENTING INDEX daily for our area and to limit the respiratory and pollutant effects of smoke during periods of poor venting due to weather conditions, the MOE restricts open burning to days of GOOD Venting when the smoke will rise to a certain height and then mix and spread aloft rather than stay close to the land mass airshed we share.
