Thetis Island already moved to a Category 2 (open burn/yard waste) ban twenty days ago due to local conditions.

Now, as of Thursday noon, the Province has moved to a Category 2 ban in all other areas of the Coastal Fire Region.

Specifically, this prohibition applies to:

the burning of any material (piled or unpiled) smaller than two metres high and three metres wide;

the burning of stubble or grass over an area less than 2,000 square metres;

the use of fireworks, firecrackers, sky lanterns, burning barrels or burning cages of any size or description;

and the use of binary exploding targets (e.g., for rifle target practice)

If you are travelling on Vancouver Island and you see a column of smoke, please report it to 911. There were three bush fires Monday around Crofton, Maple Bay and Duncan area alone, that were quickly extinguished because passers-by called 911.

Here on Thetis Island it is essential that you call 911 if you see daytime smoke that is not originating from a house chimney.

Thank you for keeping us wildfire safe.
