On Thetis Island, from November through to April 1st a fire permit is not required from the TIVFD for campfires (Category 1) or hand piled yard waste fires (Category 2) or approved incinerators (Category 2). Machine piled (Category 3) fires still require a Provincial Burn Registration number, available by calling 1 888 797-1717.
From November to April you still must check the Venting Index for Southern Vancouver Island on the day of your proposed fire BEFORE you ignite it to determine if the Venting Index is “Good” ( you may light your fire) or “Poor” (you may not light your fire). The Ministry of Environment sets the index daily at 7 a.m.
If you can possibly avoid it, please do not burn leaves. Burning leaves produces unnecessary smoke. They compost well in the woods or add them to your garden soil. Winter decomposing leaves harbour many overwintering beneficial pollinating insects and other wildlife.
Campfires must continue to be less than 1/2 meter (18”) wide and yard waste piles less than 3 metres (10 feet) wide. All fires must be attended, and no fires allowed to be abandoned overnight. Yard waste fires must be started one hour after sunrise or later and extinguished by the later of 4 pm or 2 hours before sunset.
As always, no construction/deconstruction debris or garbage is allowed, and tools and water for extinguishment must be present at your burn site.
