Your First Five Feet

Many in our community are already aware of the wildfire danger here and have visited the Firesmart BC website for info and tips for reducing the wildfire hazard to your home.  But firesmarting often takes advance planning and some hard work to achieve the maximum risk reduction.  So start small...look at the area that starts at the outside wall of your home and extends out 1.5 metres...your first five feet.

What's there that can support combustion if fire brands land and smoulder?  Is a corn broom leaning on the wall?  Is the doormat combustible?  Do you have a wooden trellis on your wall with some dead vines attached?  What type of deck furniture do you have within 5 feet of the house?  Where is your woodpile?

Think about your first five feet as your last line of defence against a wildfire.  Making sure that area is clear of combustibles that could ignite your home is the first important step in fire-smarting your property.

For great information go to firesmartbc.ca or talk with your TIVFD firefighter in your neighbourhood.
