The Power of Composting in our Community

Did you know that in many communities up to 30% of the solid waste produced is organic material such as kitchen scraps and yard waste?! And in spring 2021, Thetis Island residents imported over $10,000 worth of compost! Many landfill-bound organic materials created by Thetis residents could be used to create our own high quality compost on-island, which could be used by local farms and gardens. These actions would decrease garbage hauling costs as well as compost importation costs, and foster community sufficiency and sustainability.

In partnership with TIRRA, ThINC is working on a sustainability program proposal this summer to create an island composting system. We believe it makes sense to reduce the amount of garbage leaving the island, while decreasing the amount of compost and soil coming in. To do this, we need your help! Please fill out this survey to inform us about your composting habits and your interest in this project. All responses will remain anonymous and will help us steer the proposal and project in the direction wanted by the Thetis community.

The link to this survey can be found here: https://forms.gle/3PcqZmr7c7DkK9tKA

Please submit your survey by midnight on Monday, July 20th.

We appreciate all responses as they will greatly help with this initiative!
