I came across this CBC news info which I think is worth to post it - just to know and think about it.
Especially with all the hesitance and arguing of people not to do their own composting. Well as many think it is so 'comfortable' to buy compost from off Thetis Island and be done with it!?!
After all don't forget with every load you may introduce non native critter and pest to our island - like the black slugs already. And you can't see any e.g. slugs, snail eggs etc. in any compost. The surprise comes later!!
With some off island bought compost or some very 'hip' new flowers and plants in nice pots or baskets from the garden store you may put another nail in the 'coffin' of our dying and changing native eco-system on Thetis. Slowly slowly one at a time.
Although everyone has all they need for composting on Thetis and could grow their own veggies and plants/shrubs and trees too. Still people are scared too get their hands dirty. I don't know why!?! I think making your own compost and growing your own plants is just fun and keeps you active.
Well imagine if our bylaws would be more useful too we could even have a community composting going on Thetis Island. I heard a lot of bureaucratic arguments about it. I just can only shake my head!?!
Well something for Island Trust to think about and support and make it work - now!! NOT maybe in ~30 years (Islands 2050)! Prevent a problem is better than programs to correct mistakes - see our plastic garbage 'recycling' issues. A problem of human society tracking on for decades from local to international.
