Yellow weather notification for British Columbia. A ridge of high pressure is building over B.C. this weekend and will bring a short period of heat. Heat Warnings are possible for parts of the coast, Southern Interior and possibly Central Interior, but not likely for the entire area as temperatures are marginal for this event. Heat Warning criteria may be met as early as Sunday, August 7th. The hot spell seems to end Wednesday or Thursday (August 10 or 11th) after which there is a likelihood of thunderstorms over southern B.C. The hot and dry weather will bring a risk of heat related illness and increased fire danger. Lightning from thunderstorms that follow the heat event may increase the potential of new wildfire activity and gusty winds from thunderstorms may further enhance the spread of wildfires.
The TIVFD asks that you keep a lookout for smoke columns and report sightings to 911. Campfires have been prohibited everywhere except Haida Gwaii at this time. We are still in HIGH Hazard rating but this may change over the weekend. Proceeding with an abundance of caution, you can still work with spark producing machinery (mowers, chainsaws etc.) in grass or forest before 1 pm provided you set a two hour fire watch afterwards.
