SYNOPSIS:
Smoke is expected to get heavier on Thursday and Friday, especially in the Lower Mainland and southern Vancouver Island, leading to poor air quality and visibility. Temperatures will stay warm and much of the Coastal Fire Centre remains very dry, keeping fire risk high. There is a chance of scattered thunderstorms this weekend with possible dry lightning. Because of the smoke specific temperature and wind forecasts may be less accurate.
OUTLOOK: Saturday to Monday:
Smoke is expected to start clearing on Saturday, leaving behind some haze but improving conditions. Low-pressure systems moving in could trigger thunderstorms across much of the Coastal Fire Centre. By Sunday, an offshore low will bring cooler temperatures and scattered showers. While rainfall will be light, it should help reduce fire activity. Storms are possible on Sunday afternoon with lightning accompanied by rain.
THETIS ISLAND remains in EXTREME over the weekend, and we will be monitoring conditions to see if we can be lowered to HIGH sometime next week.
