Ollas are porous clay irrigation vessels. When buried in the ground and filled with water, ollas slowly release moisture to surrounding plants-- right in the root zone. Ollas can reduce water use by 70% as compared to surface watering and they save you time in the garden!

The use of ollas can be traced back to ancient civilizations, such as the Aztecs and Romans, where they served as vital tools for water conservation and transportation.

Local Ollas are handmade on Mayne Island. They are 32 cm tall and capable of holding approximately 8.5 litres of water. They are designed to water a 1.2 meter square (4 feet by 4 feet) raised garden bed.

If you are also seeking to reduce or eliminate plastic in your garden these are a great option.

I am in communication with the local producers, Mayne Island Clayworks, and can facilitate the transport of Thetis Island orders (within capacity of my car!) if they are received by Sunday, May 9th. More details and contact info can be found at their website: www.mayneclay.ca
