A Brief History of Gaining the Right to Vote in the USA (USE IT or LOSE IT)

18-year-olds gained the right to vote on July 1, 1971, with certification of the 26th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Native Americans gained the right to vote in all federal elections on June 2, 1924, with the passage of the Indian Citizenship Act (before this, about 1/3 of Native Americans did not have voting rights).

Women 21+ years old, gained the right to vote on August 26, 1920, when the 19th Amendment was formally adopted.

All male citizens 21+ years old, including formerly enslaved persons, gained the right to vote on February 3, 1870, when the 15th Amendment was ratified.

Before the 15th Amendment, many "categories" of adults (for example, white men without property, Jews, women, and free Blacks) were denied any voting rights. In 1789, the US Constitution granted voting rights to only about 6% of the population (almost exclusively, white male property owners) .
