Did you know that we have dedicated teams of volunteers that ensure Forbes Hall Community Centre is open during major Power Outage events and High Heat events?
Powers Out Team (POT Heads) – thanks, Andy Lamb, for the moniker!
These volunteers turn out to make sure that the Hall is open as a warm space for people to be during major Power Outages, providing washrooms, light and, often, warm beverages and snacks. Having a safe place to be where you can sit quietly with book, or enjoy a more social area with others, whether doing puzzles, playing or just visiting, helps make those long days easier to manage.
HOT Heads - a good name for the volunteers who open the air-conditioned hall during High Heat!
During High Heat when the daytime temps go 29° or higher and the overnight lows are not expected to go to 16° or lower, a team of these volunteers is put together to ensure the hall is open as a cooling center. The high and low temperatures are clinically determined; our bodies need to have several hours in cool temperatures to stay healthy. Additionally, there is a HEPA air purifier in the Library providing clean air during smoky weather.
During these hours, the hall may be open due to a community activity taking place instead of volunteers. The doors are open for others to use the space respectfully while the activities occur. Dependant on conditions, some days will be open all-day while others just while the activities are happening. Each day and hours of availability will be posted.
Forbes Hall was built by and for the community. These openings are an example of the generous nature of our community; we are appreciative of the facility and the volunteers!
