Discussion ~ Mosquito Control 2015

Remember how bad the mosquitoes were last year?

It’s time to start thinking of ways to avoid a similar influx again this summer.  The main source of salt marsh mosquitoes - those big, dusty gray kamikaze insects - is the slough at the south end of the island.  They lay their eggs in the mud and when high tides flood the mud flats in spring and summer they hatch in their thousands.  The eggs are viable in the mud for many years and I’m sure last year’s mosquitoes added to the inventory.

In the past there was a flapper valve on the culvert that runs under Pilkey Point Road.  3 or 4 years ago, that flapper rusted off the culvert and hasn’t been replaced.  We need someone with metal work experience to give us a new flapper valve.

This is also a health issue as mosquitoes are vectors for West Nile Virus. And since the mosquito infestation affected the whole island last year, this is not something that one or two people should be responsible for.  The whole community needs to be behind this to achieve a community made solution.  Is this an issue for TIRRA to address?

The purpose of this email is to get the discussion going and it will be in small gatherings. So start thinking and problem solving.

Next summer’s happiness is in the balance!

Blue Dot Movement

Sign On to the Blue Dot Movement

By Louise Bell- Denman Island

Amended for Thetis by Suzanne Sarioglu

What is the Blue Dot Movement?

Now in its second year, the Blue Dot Movement is a country-wide lobby group of citizens like you and me who are asking all levels of government to recognize the right of Canadians to a healthy environment. The ultimate goal is to achieve an amendment to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms to guarantee the right to breathe clean air, drink clean water and consume safe food.

The Blue Dot Movement is a project of the David Suzuki Foundation. It is supported by a strong network of partners, including media, academia, environmentalists, activist organizations, and other groups.

To learn more about this grassroots campaign, visit www.bluedot.ca. In particular, I recommend watching the video on the home page. Against a backdrop of dramatic images, it presents an eloquent and persuasive case for recognizing environmental rights at the same priority level as the fundamental freedoms and democratic rights now protected by the Charter.

Fundraising Work for Thetis Equestrian Students

Telegraph Harbour Inn Equestrian Centre is proud to announce we are planning to go out and compete! Ok so maybe that sounds like nothing new... BUT wait there’s more!

We are very proud of the progress of all of our current students, but two in particular have really worked hard at their goals and are ready to strut their stuff.

Sol Rogers and Anna Thiessen will be entering the Foxstone schooling show on March 29th.

At this competition (held in Duncan) they will be riding the first division which consists of a course of poles in walk and trot. They will be judged on their position and ability to control their mounts.

We are putting these dedicated riders to work to help fund this venture as expenses for travel and entries quickly add up! They will be available to do odd chores for locals in exchange for funding for their show entries.

Some of the expenses we will be trying to cover are:

Show Entry Fee: $126 each (this includes the horses stall and GST)
BC Ferries: $70 (horse trailer and people)
Horse Council BC Membership: $43.12 each (required insurance for all competitors)
We do not ask that anyone pay these fees. Sol and Anna will work for their entries.

Sunday February 15th Dinner Club ~ cancelled

Only Thetis Islanders who are quite bold

Have stayed on here in the rain and the cold;

But Shirley and Tom, Helen, Steven and Ted

Have all packed up and quite cheerily fled;

Off in the sun and the warm they are lolling.

Alas, the Dinner Club is cancelled cause no one was calling.

Hope to see you at the March 15th Dinner! Plan now.

Dee Smith
