More Treasures at My Free Store

Thanks again fellow islanders.

Keep on helping yourselves to my former treasures.
Today I added a 3-drawer filing cabinet, some trailer hitches, both 2" and 1and seven eighths. More dishes, cutlery and pots/pans, a brand-new bra for a GM truck, a transfer pump for oil from an inboard/outboard...too much to list.

Gracias,

Donovan

PS The radial arm saw is now free. If you can't pick it up, I can deliver it to you for a very nominal charge.

The Thetis Island Improvement District will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Saturday, May 4th, 2024 at 11 AM at Forbes Hall Community Centre

The purpose of this public meeting is to receive the audited financial statements for 2023, report on the operations of the Thetis Island Volunteer Fire Department, the Improvement District, and any other items of business that may arise.

This year, two (2) trustees positions are up for election. These positions are three (3) year terms

---

The role of trustees:

Trustees must make decisions to ensure that adequate funds are available to maintain current operations and to replace capital infrastructure as it ages.

Furthermore, trustees must establish reserve funds (capital) and those funds can only be used for the specific purpose for which the fund was established.

Prepare financial statements according to GAAP and appoint an auditor.

---

If anyone is interested in running for one of these Trustee positions, please contact the Corporate Administrative Officer Anne-Marie Koeppen by 12:00 Noon, Friday, April 5th, 2024, at: gotoannemarie@hotmail.com

Interested individuals must complete a nomination form, which can be obtained from Anne-Marie and submit it by the deadline specified. The nomination form is to be signed by two nominators.

To be eligible to vote at an Improvement District election and run for the board of trustees, individuals must be a Canadian citizen, 18 years of age or older, a resident of BC for at least six months prior to the vote, and own land in the Improvement District.

If required, an advance Trustee election voting opportunity will be available on Saturday, April 20th, 2024

10:00 AM - 12:00 Noon at Forbes Hall.

If required, trustee election voting will also take place on Saturday, May 4th, 2024

10:00 AM - 11:00 AM prior to the AGM.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Restoration of Bull Kelp

Kelp in the Salish Sea (and around the world) are in decline.  As kelp supports many fish and invertebrates, restoration of kelp could contribute to healthy marine ecosystems.  A group of Thetis Island volunteers, in collaboration with Ocean Wise Conservation Association and Canadian Kelp Resources, is pursuing a small aquaculture lease to attempt to restore bull kelp around Fraser point, Thetis Island.  Please find attached our official notice to the public of this project, including opportunities to comment.

April 1 Fire Permits

All outdoor fires (campfires included) will require a Fire Permit from the TIVFD at thetisislandfire.ca on April 1st to October 31st.

All yard waste fire setters are required to check the Venting Index prior to lighting their fire and only light the fire on a GOOD Venting Index day. This is a Provincial requirement from the Ministry of Environment and is applicable year-round.

Yard waste burn piles may be prohibited earlier than in past years. Already the Cariboo Fire District has banned outdoor Category 2 & 3 fires and there is an out of control fire at Lumby due to a back yard burn that escaped.

As I write this e-Spokes (Monday at 1:20 pm) the Municipality of North Cowichan is responding to a serious bush fire.

Please be safe, have your water source and tools at your yard waste site and do not leave your fire unattended. If possible, chip your coarse woody debris instead of burning.

Thank you.
Fire Chief J. Caldbeck
