BC Wildfire Service update from Executive Director, Ian Meier

As British Columbia moves through the core wildfire months of July and August, this fire season looks and feels different than most. The COVID-19 pandemic has created additional pressures and complications on wildfire management in B.C. and for our partner agencies throughout Canada and around the world.

The BC Wildfire Service has made several adaptations to standard procedures as guided by provincial health authorities and our internal Adaptation and Continuity team. In some cases, new procedures were developed to address concerns that weren’t covered by existing protocols.

Throughout this challenging time, the BCWS is committed to carrying out our mandate to:

  1. Deliver effective wildfire management and emergency response support on behalf of the Government of British Columbia
  2. Protect lives and values at risk
  3. Encourage sustainable, healthy, and resilient ecosystems

As British Columbians, we must all work together and take a shared responsibility to limit the negative impacts of wildfire and COVID-19 this summer. The BC Wildfire Service relies on the trust, cooperation and assistance of our partner agencies, industry, local authorities, First Nations and communities to effectively deliver our mandate.

The BC Wildfire Service remains committed to the relationships we have been building throughout B.C. We recognize that local authorities have a responsibility to protect the health and well-being of their communities, perhaps more now than ever. The BC Wildfire Service will strive to have an open dialogue with all local authorities and communities that are impacted by wildfire response and is committed to minimizing the impact that its operations have on the communities in which it works.

Throughout the 2020 fire season, ensuring the safety, health and well-being of BC Wildfire Service employees and all British Columbians is the highest priority. The impact of decisions made will be carefully considered, operations will be adapted based on feedback received, and work will be completed together with communities with the goal of keeping everyone as safe and healthy as possible.

For more information about the adaptations made to help reduce the impact of BC Wildfire Service operations on the communities we serve, please refer to the attached information, which can be shared with the members of your community or organization.

Thank you,

Ian Meier

New Cat

Hello, we recently got a new cat so we just wanted to put the word out there in case anybody sees her wandering about.

She is a 4-year-old lynx point Siamese cat (white & grey), quite small with very short hair. She is extremely friendly and answers to the name "Mini".

Here is a picture of her as a kitten.

If you see her around in the coming days, please let us know. She lives here with us on Meadow Valley.

Thank you!

High Fire Hazard Rating

With the drying winds and increased sun and heat we have quickly moved up to HIGH HAZARD for wildfire. (As I write this, North Oyster and Ladysmith Fire Departments are responding to a bush fire near the Trans Canada and Brenton Paige Road.)

We all need to step up our safety game as we head into the delayed wildfire season.  Chainsawing etc. should be done in the morning cool hours when the humidity is higher, and a fire watch posted when work must cease at 11 a.m.  Have water and tools with you.

We are still allowing those with campfire permits to July 31st to have wood or charcoal campfires that are constantly supervised by an adult and thoroughly extinguished with an over abundance of water.  However, if you have a propane campfire appliance, now is the time to get it out and use that instead.  That way you and the island will be safer.  Propane campfire appliances do not require a permit.

If you see a plume of smoke in the daytime in the bush, call 911-Fire.  If you see ignited materials being tossed out of a car onto our roads (e.g. cigarette) call 911-RCMP with the licence number.  They will follow up.
Let’s all start to get more nervous and cautious.  The wet spring and June was great but the woods are drying out quickly.

We will reassess the solid fuel campfire permits this weekend and if we have to rescind the permits we will post in eSPOKES and contact the permit holders.  Stay tuned.

News Release - Islands Trust Releases What We Heard Islands 2050: The Future of the Trust Area

We’re planning for the future and working to find ways to meet the challenges and the opportunities we’ll face up to 2050. To get public input we initiated Islands 2050 a community engagement process and received input from over 1000 people in the Islands Trust Area.

We asked:

• What do you value about the Trust Area?

• In the context of a changing climate, what concerns do you have for the next 30 years?

• What opportunities do you see to preserve and protect the Trust Area?

Click here to view the news release about what we heard.
