Freighter Anchorages - Notice to Residents

Hi folks,

Please see the new list of information regarding the freighter anchorages surrounding Thetis & Penelakut Islands.

Unfortunately the freighter anchorage situation is going to get worse before it will get better. Transport Canada is no longer engaging residents directly, so the means and contacts for complaints have changed – see below.

NOTICE TO RESIDENTS:

There has been a dramatic increase in large commercial freighters anchoring close to homes and environmentally sensitive areas in in the Southern Gulf Islands and South East Coast of Vancouver Island. If you have concerns or questions (e.g. noise, light, impeding local boat traffic, dumping of suspicious substances, impacts on the environment), there are several ways you can report them:

Fill out this online complaint form:

https://www.portvancouver.com/southern-b-c-anchorage-noise-and-light-concerns/

Call Port of Vancouver Harbour Master's Office: 1 604-665-9086 press #2 for Marine Operations Centre.

e-mail mailto:harbor_master@portvancouver.com

Report any apparent illegal fishing: DFO 1-800-465-4336

Transport Canada has overall responsibility for commercial shipping activity. Unfortunately, Pacific Region Staff of Transport Canada are no longer engaging with residents on this issue. We recommend you copy any emails to:

Federal Transport Minister: marc.garneau@parl.gc.ca

and Parliamentary Secretary of Transport: chris.bittle@parl.gc.ca

For more information about the anchorage situation and how you can help, visit https://nofreighteranchorages.ca/

or Facebook - No Freighter Anchorages

Park Bench Missing from the End of Pilkey Point

I would like you to be aware of the fact that our Park bench at the end of Pilkey Point Rd. disappeared.

It would appear that someone was pulling logs from the foreshore area. As of this a.m., the bench is MIA, including the concrete pads. The ground and turnaround are damaged. There is no sign of the bench anywhere along the road. Just one log and a broken tow-strap and damage to the pavement at the end of the turnaround.

I have spoken with Joe Lange (Emcon), and he was not aware, nor is it part of a road maintenance matter. RCMP notified: file #20-441.

It would be great to hear from someone that this is a short-term situation and once fixed/repaired or whatever the situation is, that the bench will be returned or someone contacted with regard to its safe return.

A Rare Opportunity

On MONDAY, February 10, 7-9 p.m. at Heneage House (The Portal), Martine J. Reid, scholar, curator and Director of the Bill Reid Foundation, will give an illustrated talk, sharing her thoughts and images about social significance of Northwest Coast Indigenous art during the last century and a half. As wife of the late Haida artist, one of our most cherished and gifted artists, Martine often found herself at the centre of artistic activity here on the coast. She and her husband Rodney Badger are part-time Thetis residents.

Everyone is welcome. Bring some nibblies, if you can—and a folding chair, just in case. Contact: Gary Geddes, 250-246-8176, gedworks@islandnet.com
