Are You Ready for Wildfire Season?

The TIVFD Structure Protection Unit (SPU) has already kicked off 2025 with our first wildfire season practice! We set up pumps, hoses, and sprinklers using the homeowner’s water storage tank, and shared some simple FireSmart tips to help get started on protecting their home and property.

Wildfire preparedness and response are at their best when we all play our part. The Thetis Island Fire Dept, along with its auxiliaries, are ready to do their part this wildfire season, but your actions today can support our efforts in the future. By completing FireSmart tasks around your property, you’re doing your part to reduce the risks surrounding your home and strengthen your community’s resilience. Every step, no matter how small, can be the difference when it’s needed most.

Want to know where to start? This easy-to-follow guide outlines practical ways to lower the potential impacts of wildfire on your home:

Got questions? Need more info on how to FireSmart your property?
Reach out to:
Stu Downey (Wildfire Mitigation Specialist) or Bill Golley (Local FireSmart Rep)

Let’s work together to keep our island safe this wildfire season!

Call for Gardens! Join the Thetis Island Sustainable Garden Tour

Hello Thetis Islanders,

As part of ThINC’s Nature Stewards Program, I’ve had the opportunity to visit some truly inspiring properties and gardens across the island. Each one has sparked new ideas and renewed excitement for what’s possible in my own garden.

That’s why, this summer, we’re launching the Thetis Island Garden Tour as part of the Nature House program - a celebration of the diverse and sustainable gardening practices thriving in our community.

Each week (/every other) throughout the summer, we’ll feature one local garden in an hour-long tour, led by the gardener themselves. It’s a chance to share knowledge, connect with fellow Islanders, and be inspired by the creativity and care in our own backyards.

In keeping with ThINC’s mission to support on-island food security and biodiversity, the tour will highlight sustainable gardening methods - whether you’re practicing waterwise techniques, experimenting with hügelkultur, innovating with compost, or growing food communally.

Would you like to share your garden?
If so, I’d love to hear from you! Please email me by Sunday, June 15th atcharlotte@thetisislandnatureconservancy.org with a short blurb about your garden and what makes it special.

Warmly,
Charlotte, ThINC Stewardship and Education Coordinator

Summer and Air Quality

As we step into summer we look forward to enjoying the great outdoors. However, recent history has shown us that summer also brings us forest fires and with them poor air quality. Indeed, during active wildfire seasons, wood smoke can become the largest source of air pollution in the province.

To help islanders deal with this issue on June 26th the Forbes Hall Health Group will be hosting a discussion on Smoke and Our Health, Population and Public Health, Island Health will be sharing information on heat and smoke. Along with the talk we will be hosting a workshop on Building Your Own Air Filter. This workshop is led and sponsored by the BC Lung Association and Simon Fraser University.

At the workshop we will see how to make an easy smoke filter to improve indoor air quality from fire smoke or airborne pathogens . There will also be free filter/fan kits provided for the first 10 participants.

For more information or to reserve your spot at the DIY workshop, please contact me.
