Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at 11:05AM A couple of items of interest and a reminder from your local Ferry Advisory Committee.
Beginning June 1st 2019, BC Ferries will be implementing a 1.5% fuel surcharge.
The BC Ferry Commissioner Sheldon Stoilen has released his preliminary price cap decision for Performance Term (PT) 5 (April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2024). https://www.bcferrycommission.ca/reports-press/whats-new/ His determination is that fares will need to rise by 2.3% annually, through PT-5. The public has until June 30th to submit comments to the Commissioner. The Province has an opportunity to change the level of service or service fee if it would like to mitigate the price cap increases starting in 2020. The Commissioner will determine the final price cap for PT5 by September 30, 2019.
Finally, a reminder that Dangerous Cargo (DC) is roughly every second Thursday (the next one being June 6th). Sailings affected are the 08:40 from Chemainus for oncoming DC. Departing DC leaves Thetis on the 13:10 sailing, not the 14:40 as it did in years past. The changes to the Dangerous Cargo runs have been driven by the FAC to provide better service to both Islands and to ensure that the mail gets delivered on DC Thursdays.

Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at 10:50AM The TIVFS was incorporated on February 28, 2018. This Society is made up of firefighters and lifetime department members whose purpose is to help fund paramedic and firefighting supplies and equipment.
Earlier this month our application for charitable status was granted by the Canada Revenue Agency. This means the TIVFS can now issue tax receipts for donations and grants received. Our goal is to reduce the tax burden required to fund the operation of the Thetis Island Volunteer Fire Department.
The TIVFS is governed by a board comprising of President Alex Rozewicz , Vice President Tom Milliken and Secretary Treasurer Graeme Shelford. More information about making donations will be available soon. Please contact one of the board members if you have any questions about the Society.

Sunday, May 26, 2019 at 11:32AM Thank you to the 30 folk who came out to the Wildfire Community Preparedness seminar on Saturday. Great participation and attendees learned how to reduce the risk of total loss from wildfire to their homes and the community.
With a demonstration of the Wildfire Sprinkler Protection Kit, seven more residents expressed an interest in purchasing. We need a minimum of ten orders, so if interested please email chief11@telus.net and your name will be added to the list. The kit costs $175, taxes and shipping to Thetis is included, and contains 2 low pressure agricultural grade sprinkler heads, 2 mounting brackets and two 25’ lengths of flat garden thread forestry hose.
Coincidentally, 90 minutes after the Fire Smart presentation ended, the department was paged out for an illegal burn pile fire. The permanent resident was unaware of fire permits, the yard waste ban, and the smoke control regulations. Thanks to a passer-by who called in to 911 we were able to extinguish the fire and educate the owner.
Let’s all continue to be Fire Smart this summer.
