The residents of Thetis Island and the Cowichan Valley have responded with remarkable generosity to the Syrian Refugee Crisis. After a successful sponsorship, the Kaiyalis family arrived in Canada and are now residing in the Cowichan Valley. The community response to the Kaiyalis sponsorship was so overwhelming that there is a surplus of funds, enough to begin the sponsorship of another Syrian family.
The family we are hoping to sponsor is Louma and her two daughters, relatives of the Kaiyalis. Before the war, Louma worked as a receptionist in a doctor's office and her two girls are aged 14 and 2. They have been in Turkey since their recent escape from Syrian, after three previous unsuccessful attempts. Since they have family living in the Cowichan Valley and Victoria, this area is an ideal place for them to settle and integrate.
We are hoping to raise $7,000, to add to the funds already raised, to sponsor Louma and her girls. However, we are also in need of housing for the family in the Chemainus/Cowichan Valleys. If you have any leads on suitable accommodation (eg: houses, guest suites, cabins, apartments, etc.), please let me know.
I am happy to email the poster to you if you would like to send it onward to others.
I will be at Soup's On, March 30 to answer any questions and share more about the family.
Thank you again,
Michelle Black, for the Thetis Island Refugee Group
