CVRD Burning Bylaw Update

The following article should have been included in the Fall issue of the Quarterly.

My apologies for the fact that it did not.

Carol Sowerby

Thetis Island Improvement District…Update on the CVRD Area G Burning Bylaw

I am writing as a follow up to the CVRD meeting at Forbes Hall on June 15, 2017.

Area G director Mel Dorey copied me on a note he sent to CVRD staff recently, which is quoted below:

“Could you please proceed with writing the backyard burning bylaw for Area G excluding Thetis Island. After meeting with the residents of Thetis it is my impression that they do a really good job in supervised burning with their fire permitting by the fire department. The only improvement that I would like to see on Thetis is that they not backyard burn in the months of December or January which are the worst months of poor air quality in the Cowichan Valley. Those months should be reserved for wood stoves only, in my opinion. If at a later time we want to add Thetis to the bylaw, then it should be done then”.

On behalf of the Thetis Island Improvement District and the Thetis Island Volunteer Fire Department we would like to know what residents and property owners think of adding December and January as non-backyard burning months. Please direct any responses or opinions to Keith Rush, keithrush17@gmail.com text or talk to 250.732.2766.
