Provincial Campfire Ban / Electric Chainsaws

The Province is placing a Coastal Region Category 3 / Campfire Ban at noon, Wednesday July 18th, not including Haida Gwaii or the Tofino/Ucluelet fog zone corridor. Thetis Island preceded this ban by 2 1/2 days due to local conditions.

There have been some enquiries about By-Law 70 and how that pertains to electric chain saws. Electric chainsaws, either batter powered or energized via an electrical cord to residential power, can be used during EXTREME fire hazard periods but the chain saw blade must not be able to come in contact with stones, rocks, metal etc. to. cause sparks.  In other words, limbing and bucking can take place if the limbs or logs are twice the length of your electric chain saw bar above the ground. As always, an extinguisher or water supply should be on hand. Gasoline powered chainsaws are prohibited during EXTREME. hazard conditions.

The TIVFD reminds you that fire safety is everyone's concern.  We don't have the luxury of calling on other Fire Depts. for mutual aid to assist our small department during a fire incident.  Therefore we must be extra cautious and vigilant. A fire that may start small has the potential to be come Island-wide in these conditions.
