26 Weeks to Emergency Preparedness

Dear Thetis Islanders,

To help you accomplish this, Cowichan Valley Emergency Management published an Emergency Preparedness Workbook available online at

https://www.cvrd.ca/DocumentCenter/View/84184/MIECM-Emergency-Preparedness-Workbook---2017?bidId=

The " 26 Weeks " segment is a mere two pages of the workbook that is full of valuable information and worth reading all the way through. Copies are also available from your LERN captain.

Week 9 recommended scouting out the hazards in your home and neighbourhood and mitigating those you can. ( page 15 -34)

Week 10

Prepare a First Aid kit
that includes prescription medications (keep a list as well), eyeglasses, bandages, sterile gauze pads, tape, scissors, tweezers, antibiotic ointment, and other items such as over the counter pain relievers. (see page 10). Consider taking a basic First Aid course.

Week 11

Give every family member specific safety tasks to do in an emergency. E.g.   designate one person to be in charge of turning off electricity (and /or propane), one to collect the emergency container, one to track down family members and make sure people with disabilities or special needs are provided for. Make sure someone is delegated to look after pets. (see pages 4 & 5 )

Wishing you a healthy and safe start to Spring.

Mary F, Petra A, Eleanor V, Gurk S and Virginia L.
