Fire Hazard Update

That huge deluge we were expecting this past weekend registered 5 mm, or 1/5th of an inch (0.2”) of moisture.  That wasn’t enough to move the fire hazard rating significantly.  Rain has to soak into the forest floor fuels as well as the soil.

We are hoping the trend to lighter winds, higher humidities and real rain keeps up but we are still holding in EXTREME.

We really appreciate your patience and thank you for your understanding.  The fire chief also needs to chainsaw firewood, split and chip, and spread gravel on the driveway so totally understands your impatience to get the fall chores done.  But listening to the fire scanner of the departments in the Cowichan Valley, they are going out daily for human caused bush fires because their citizens aren’t understanding the fire hazard.  We aren’t out of the woods yet.

Thank you all for keeping our island safe.

Fire Chief J. Caldbeck   TIVFD

PS. Please check if you have a spark screen on your chimney if you are using your indoor wood stove.  And never burn cardboard or paper…the embers fly and drift out of the chimney easily.
