Follow Up Radon Information

A number of Islanders were unable to attend the meeting and asked if the meeting information is available. Angela Eyekelbosh has provided the slides from the meeting:
https://www.bkis-orchard.net/pages/misc/radon/Radon-Presentation-2026-10-01.pdf
A question came up at the meeting regarding radon in our well water and Angela has provided the following information regarding radon in water:

If your home uses a private well, radon dissolved in groundwater can be released into the indoor air when the water is used. Health Canada recommends addressing radon from soil first, since it is typically the larger source of indoor radon. If you’ve addressed all other potential entry points and radon levels are still high, Canadian Lung Association sells a specialized radon-in-water test kit. However, you have to make sure you draw your sample on a Monday and then express courier your sample to the lab (in the US); it has to arrive within 7 days.

If it turns out that well water is contributing to high radon levels, aeration and granular activated carbon (GAC) are effective treatment methods for removing radon from water. Keep in mind that if you use a GAC filter then theoretically you would be accumulating radioactive particles on the filter and that might be difficult to dispose of. There are also proprietary systems that inject air into the well itself to aerate the water, removing the radon before it enters the house, but it’s best to consult with a certified remediator for a solution that best fits your set up.

Thanks,
