Needed: Maintenance Person for St. Margarets Cemetery

After a number of years of attending to maintenance matters at St. Margarets Cemetery, Sid Mawson is retiring. The cemetery board thanks Sid for his commitment to the cemetery and his work efforts to keep the grounds safe and functioning well. We particularly thank him for the construction of the shed and a rainwater collection system. Good luck Sid and have a great time!

The Cemetery now needs a volunteer maintenance person. The job would require a commitment of from 36-48 hours a year. The work can be seasonal with summer months requiring more time and winter months less. All grass cutting is done by another volunteer. All grave digging is contracted out. There is an annual clean up every spring which the community as a whole engages in. All larger development projects are managed by the board but may require and seek input from the maintenance person.

Here is a general range of work which would be expected :Winter, spring, fall and summer monitoring especially after storms for damage, trees down , water pooling and ditches functioning; monitoring invasive species ( example broom ,spurge laurel, holly); Watering new plants over summer months; weed whacking the front entrance near the main gate; leaf litter clean up. After interment the maintenance person would be asked to make sure the site has been properly cleaned up, extra soil removed and the plot respectfully left in good condition. This job is mostly self-directed, but the maintenance person would be required to liaise with the board on all matters, maintenance of special note (i.e. tree management) and engage with cemetery meetings which take place 4 times a year.

Working in the cemetery, a quiet park like setting can be very satisfying. The cemetery is operated by a board many of whom have had a long and special relationship to it. We welcome new volunteers and the energy and experience they bring.
