Campfire Hazard

TIVFD has inspected a campfire site on the top of Mt Burchell. It was relatively recent, certainly since BC banned all campfires on July 16th. Not to mention on Private Property. It was then abandoned to burn itself out. No attempt was made to put it out. (There is no water source up there).

The life and property of everyone on Thetis Island was put at risk. It would be extremely difficult to put such a fire out in this location since none of our major water transporting equipment could get up there. We might be able to control a small fire situation up there, but if it starts burning into the bush, it would be uncontrollable. The moss on which the fire was kindled is bone dry.

For those who think wildfire crews and water bombers would quickly come to our rescue, you haven’t been paying attention to the fires raging throughout the province.

If you know who might be responsible, please educate them to the dangers that they are exposing the island to.
