Seeking new Ham Radio operators: ARCTIC Wolves on Thetis

Maynard Johnny Jr. tells us that of the Thunderbird, Wolf and Human depicted in his carving that graces Forbes Hall, "the Wolf represents the runner and messenger to keep the people informed."

When the power goes off many of us lose our normal methods of communication. Amateur radio operators (aka hams) train to help neighbours when the abnormal happens: power outage, cell towers down, impassable roads.

Hams on the island monitor radio waves and are able to communicate essential information between each other and across the water.

At the best of times, phones are for one-to-one contact so one may need to make many calls to inform many people, or to find the one person who can help. Amateur radio can broadcast a message heard by many, to link with help wherever it may be. The Amateur Radio Club of the Thetis Island Community (ARCTIC) currently is a small group committed to being ready to help you.

ARCTIC needs new members, and especially some who can run like the wolf down trails, up hills and through bush, to be the eyes and ears in potentially cut off areas of the island. If you can hear the wolf calling, talk to one of us. We will support you in getting licensed, equipped and practiced. Fifteen-year-olds, even keen10-year-olds, can become licensed. You could make it a family project, to run like the wolf.
