Evening Campfire Permits now Available

Effective at 12 p.m. (noon) PDT on Thursday, September 3, 2026, Category 1 open fire (campfire) prohibitions in the Coastal Fire Centre’s jurisdiction will be rescinded, including Thetis Island. TIVFD evening CAMPFIRE permits for regulation size campfires (no larger than half metre by half metre) with water available on-site and a tool (shovel or rake) are available. Watch for sparks and do not ignite in strong winds. It is the responsibility of the individual permit holder to ensure that burning is done in a safe and responsible manner and in accordance with regulations.

Campfires permits will be available for the period starting September 3rd to October 31st upon request and acknowledgement that you have read and understood the safety requirements. Evening Campfire Permits will be available on-line at www.thetisislandfire.ca website under Fire Permit or at permits@thetisislandfire.ca.

Please note that the permit can be rescinded at any time if fire risk conditions change.

Category 2 and Category 3 open fires remain prohibited throughout the Coastal Fire Centre’s jurisdiction including Thetis Island. No backyard burning of yard waste. Also prohibited:

• Binary exploding targets
• Fireworks (Fireworks Act-https://www.bclaws.gov.bc.ca/civix/document/id/complete/stat...)
• Burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description
• Controlled air incinerators
• Air curtain burners
• Carbonizers

Although fire danger ratings have declined throughout much of the Coastal Fire Centre as a result of recent rainfall, along with shorter days, longer nights and cooler temperatures, islanders are encouraged to continue exercising caution with the use of any campfire.

(Anyone found in contravention of an open-burning prohibition may be issued a violation ticket for $1,150. They may be required to pay an administrative penalty of up to $10,000 or, if convicted in court, may be fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail.
