Ride to Conquer Cancer ~ Seeking Donations
Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at 7:43AM This is my first year participating in the Ride to Conquer Cancer, a 260 km, 2 day ride that spans from Vancouver to Seattle, that raises money for the BC Cancer foundation. I was motivated to join my team, To The Max Cycling Club, after 2 of my close cycling friends told me about the experiences with the Ride since 2009. To The Max is a team based out of Vancouver with over 50 participants, who have combined raised almost $80,000 this year with an end goal of $100,000.
Cancer will affect every one of us in our lifetime, whether directly or indirectly with a close friend or loved one. In order to participate, I must raise $2500, with an overall goal of $3200, with every penny of these fundraising efforts donated to the BC Cancer foundation. My chosen field is skin cancer and dermatology as I am considered a high risk for melanoma in my lifetime. As the effects of the sun have taken their toll on my skin over the years I now understand the importance of education, early warning signs, and prevention of skin cancer.
Thank you so much for your support,

This amazing event is completely organized by volunteers and jointly hosted by the Thetis Island Community Association and Thetis Island Community Fund. 100% of the net proceeds will support both of these organizations.

The Portal
Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 3:11PM I’ve been asked explain why I suggested the “The Portal” as a new name for what has long been known as Camp Columbia. Here is what I wrote when I first suggested the name as a possibility. It appears to have stuck:
“The Portal”
This was my suggestion for a new name for the former Camp Columbia. First, the world ‘portal’ contains a lovely hint of Porter family name. Second, the word ‘portal’ refers in architecture to a larger doorway, or gate, the entrance to something important. In fiction and in film, ‘portal’ usually indicates a doorway to another time, place or dimension, a magic entryway to new adventures, which perfectly reflects what we want to do with this amazing property, a space that stirs the imagination and suggests transformations, news ways of seeing and doing things. The two arbutus trees leaning across the road halfway down the drive reinforce the impression I have, and which the new name conveys, of something magical about to take place.

Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 3:06PM We have a friend, Kairyn, who would like a ride to Parskville on Sunday anytime.
She would also consider Nanaimo if she can't find a ride to Parksville. She will contribute to fuel costs.
Call Ken and Genny or Kairyn at 250-246-2465
Another Thank-you...
Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 3:03PM I forgot to thank Steve Frankel and Anais Gerber for the posters they made for the sale. That is likely why there were so many folks at the hall!
