Solid Waste Committee Request
Saturday, July 29, 2017 at 10:45PM A Friendly Reminder/Your Support Needed!
The Volunteers and Staff at our Solid Waste and Refuse Site would deeply appreciate your assistance regarding recyclables and returnables. Any metal, and or, other containers, which contained food products and or liquids should be cleaned prior to being brought to our Recycle, or Returnable(s) site. This would greatly assist our community members who are doing the sorting.
This is a hot summer and smells in these uncleaned containers are quite unpleasant, as well, it would be healthier for our Solid Waste Volunteers and staff to be sorting containers, bottles, etc, that are cleaned.
If you have any questions, concerns regarding this message or any other SW Committee information or questions, please feel free to call 250-246-2099.
Again, Many Thanks for your support!

Near Miss ~ Tuesday Night
Thursday, July 27, 2017 at 7:09AM Tuesday evening an unthinking, uninformed and undeniably dangerous person(s) set a sky lantern (a paper lantern with an open flame) adrift over Thetis Island. It came to rest on a residential roof and very fortunately for the home owner and his neighbourhood, it self-extinguished and he discovered it in the morning. Sky lanterns are prohibited! If you happen to see one in the sky, call 911 immediately and try to keep your eye on where it is going. There are many, many instances of catastrophic fires caused by these cheap “party” items.

What does EXTREME Fire Hazard Mean?
Thursday, July 27, 2017 at 7:02AM When Thetis Island goes to EXTREME Fire Hazard, it means that all open burning is banned and a number of other spark producing activities are curtailed. EXTREME means that new fires can start easily, spread rapidly, and will challenge even timely suppression efforts.
When our wildfire/interface hazard is EXTREME the use of powered equipment (gasoline, diesel & electric), including chainsaws, lawnmowers, chippers, portable mills etc., outdoors is prohibited. Generally speaking, safely used and located carpentry tools are not included in this prohibition. Always have a charged hose or extinguisher nearby when using carpentry power tools outdoors.
Do NOT use electric or gas lawnmowers. The metal blade hitting even a small rock can cause a spark. An electric, plastic-stringed weed eater can be used carefully to cut down tall grass (the risk of fire in the tall grass is higher than the risk from the electric weed-eater).
You must use extreme care and have safety precautions in place when using anything that produces heat, as the island is alarmingly dry. Have a telephone with you to call 911 immediately if necessary.
Propane campfire appliances and BBQs are still allowed but must always be supervised, and have a flame length no greater than 6 inches.
Thank you all for being vigilant and fire safe. There have been many fires already in the Cowichan Valley, started by human activity. While our neighbouring fire departments are able to rely upon other fire halls for equipment and personnel, we are on our own here, and we appreciate everyone’s efforts to limit the fire risk.
