Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at 11:06AM Exciting news! The Porter family has generously offered ThINC a building at 'The Portal' (our current name for the former Camp Columbia) to use as a nature house in support of our summer nature education program. In collaboration with the Cowichan Land Trust, the Canada Summer Jobs program and the Thetis Island Community Fund, we've hired Danny Osborne, a 3rd year biology student from VIU to run the nature house and deliver activities and programs 3 days a week in July and August for the benefit of Thetis Islanders.
We've been busy cleaning and painting to get the nature house ready for the summer. With the help of Coastal Community Credit Union and a private donor, we've ordered a Seaquarium (salt water aquarium and touch tank) to enhance marine education. An islander has donated 5 boxes of natural history books for the beginnings of a nature library. We're collecting furniture and program materials to make the nature house a positive and enriching experience for children and adults alike.
If you have any of the following items you would be willing to donate or lend for the summer, please contact Ann at 250-246-8176 or email ThINC@thetisisland.net and we'll arrange to pick them up.
Here's our wish list:
Leftover acrylic latex paint (preferably light bright colours - blues, greens yellows etc...)
Book shelves (4 1/2 ft high or less to fit under windows)
Nature related books
Comfortable reading chairs
Floor and desk lamps
Art and craft supplies
Microscopes
Binoculars
3 in 1 colour printer/scanner/copier
Magnifying glasses
Collecting nets and jars
Cork Bulletin board
Anything else you think might be useful
We will also need funds to purchase supplies, so if you'd like to contribute financially to this exciting community opportunity, you can donate, for a charitable tax receipt, online or by cheque through the Cowichan Community Land Trust (www.cowichanlandtrust.ca, click Donate Now and specify Thetis Island Nature Conservancy) or if you don't require a tax receipt, directly by cheque to the Thetis Island Nature Conservancy at Box 18-2, Thetis Island, V0R 2Y0.
THANK YOU! We hope to see you and your guests at the Nature House this summer!

Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at 11:08AM Friday May 19th at Maria's Cottage
(Pot of Gold) 73 Pilkey Point Road
My Mom has downsized so we have many items of her clothing back at her little house. Nice Brands include Orvis, Lands End, Coldwater Creek, National Geographic, etc. The clothing is in a rainbow of colours and prints in mostly large sizes and in near new condition. There are shells, turtlenecks, shirts, blouses, suits, jackets, coats, housecoats and a couple elegant evening outfits and dresses too, also some costume jewelry and scarves.
Because the Cottage is tiny and parking is limited, please call ahead for a time to come. We can comfortably fit four persons at a time and hope about a half hour of shopping time is workable. If a group of friends would like to come together that would be fun. We will start bookings for 10am.

Thank you,
Nan Beals

Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at 10:42AM If you didn’t get your yard waste burning finished in the past six and a half months, you will get one more week to finish it up for the season. This cool, moist weather will continue until the May Long Weekend, (May 20, 21, 22) and the Fire Weather Forecast expects significant warming and drying by then, raising the Fire Hazard Danger quickly.
If you already have a Yard Waste Permit that expires on May 15th, It is now extended to May 22nd automatically. If you do not have a yard waste Fire Permit, please apply on-line at www.thetisislandfire.ca for one. YARD WASTE OPEN FIRE PERMITS WILL END ON MAY 22nd until the Fall.
Campfire Permits are valid until May 31st. Please apply again for a June campfire permit at the end of this month.

Friday, May 12, 2017 at 7:46AM Starting May 12th, the Glass Sponge Reef will be live-streamed through until May 23rd. Please click on the image to view.
Although glass sponges look like plants, they are actually animals and are the world’s oldest multi-cell organisms. The glass sponge was thought to have gone extinct 40 million years ago, but the animal was discovered in B.C. in 1987. Some of B.C.'s glass sea sponge reefs are thought to be 9,000 years old.
