Air Compressor Needed ~

One of the tires on our car has a slow leak, and is now almost flat.

Does anyone on the island have a portable air compressor (either plug-in

or battery-operated) which we could borrow to re-inflate the tire?

Thank you very much!

BC Ferries ~ Chemainus Terminal Update

BC Ferries has contacted me to say that there has been a change in plan for the Chemainus terminal work.

"Upon further detailed inspection and survey of the marine structures at the Chemainus terminal, the scope of work previously planned has now been altered to be ‘life extension’ versus ‘replacement’. Most importantly, this means there are no expectations for berth closures at this point. However there is a possibility of needing to cancel some sailings during the construction period. Thus, the plan to start working on FAC/stakeholder communications around a closure and alternate service is not necessary".

The construction work is still planned for January 2017.

If you have any questions, please call.

The Cougar ~ Free Event ~ Nov 18 7PM

Public Reading: The Cougar, Beautiful, Wild and Dangerous

A Free Event- This event is made possible with financial assistance of the Canada Council through The Writers' Union of Canada and the Real Estate Foundation of BC. It is co-hosted by Cowichan Valley Naturalists Society.

WHO Paula Wild, Author

WHAT Paula will read from her book The Cougar: Beautiful, Wild and Dangerous.

Vancouver Island has the highest density of cougars, as well as the highest rate of attacks on humans. And chances are, if you spend any amount of time in the woods, a cougar’s seen you while you’ve been totally oblivious to its presence.  In an impeccably researched blend of natural history, scientific research and first-person accounts, Wild explores what makes this animal so beautiful, so dangerous and such a valuable part of our environment.

WHEN Wednesday, November 18, 2015, 7 pm

WHERE VIU Cowichan Campus  - Lecture Hall – Rm 140

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:  Paula Wild is the author of six books, including Sointula Island Utopia, winner of a BC Historical Federation Certificate of Merit for its significant contribution to history. She has also written for numerous periodicals, including British Columbia Magazine, Reader’s Digest and Canada’s History Magazine. She lives in Courtenay, BC. A BC Bestseller, The Cougar: Beautiful, Wild and Dangerous is the Gold Winner for Nature Book of the Year at Foreword Reviews’ USA IndieFab Awards and was a finalist for the BC Book Prizes’ Booksellers’ Choice Award.

AJ MacEachern

Aubrey John MacEachern

November 11, 1954 - November 11, 2015

Aubrey, known as “A.J.” to many, passed away from this world on November 11, 2015.  He had been treated for heart and other complicating issues.   Aubrey was born in Charlottetown, PEI and spent many years living and working in British Columbia.  He was the loving son of Eleanor MacEachern and the late John A. MacEachern.  Dear brother of Adele (Carl) Crawford, Roberta (David) McKenna, Bonnie (Shane) Keddy, Stephen MacEachern and Darren (Heather) MacEachern. He will also be sadly missed by Aunt and Uncle Norma and Stanley Thompson, many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

Following time served on Coast Guard Ships Aubrey left home at a young age to pursue a career in British Columbia.  During his years at sea he studied and achieved his Second Class Marine Engineer’s Status.  This included his placement as Chief Engineer on the Quadra and many years at the BC Ferries.  He spent many years with Dome Petroleum working in the Beaufort Sea (the Explorer II).  He made wonderful friends along the way while developing a love of travel, music and his culinary skills.  He loved to entertain with a generous spirit.  We will all miss him terribly but were blessed to have him in our lives.

The family would like to extend our deepest thanks to all who have expressed their condolences and who made Aubrey’s life so full.  Thank you as well to the extraordinary staff of ICU at Nanaimo Regional Hospital.

A Celebration of Aubrey`s life will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2015 .  We look forward to seeing family and friends at the Thetis island marina, 3 - 5 pm for refreshments and conversation.

Free US Cell Phone ~

We have a throwaway US cellphone with 198 minutes of call time remaining, but it expires on Dec 16th, 2015.  If you are travelling to the USA before then and could use it, you can have it.  Seems a pity to waste it.

Apple Mac Computer Scam

While browsing the internet today, a pop-up window appeared, informing me that I had a critical security warning and all my system resources had been shut down. The poorly presented pop-up was replete with grammatical and spelling errors, which is usually a good way to detect computer scams. Do not call the included number and give them remote access to your computer and your credit card number. For more discussion go to https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6792202?start=0&tstart=0

This is almost as good as the previous scam which purported to be the RCMP freezing your computer for copyright violations, which however could be forgiven by going to Petro Can and withdrawing a UKASH VOUCHER FOR $100 TO PAY THE FINE.
