July 9

·        Make and Use a Plankton Net: 1-4 PM

Did you know there are millions of tiny creatures living in the waters just off the beaches of Thetis Island? These creatures—plankton—are important food sources for each other, as well as other marine life! Many marine biologists have specialized plankton nets that are capable of removing these critters from the water, but often cost upwards of $500. We will be showing you how to construct your own and you will be able to use it to view the plankton species from the beaches using our microscope!

As with all of our programs, each is by donation to ThINC, or free if you’ve purchased a membership. Friends of the Nature House summer memberships are still available ($25/individual, $50/family)! If you have any questions regarding the Nature House programming, or would like to get involved, contact Danny at danny@cowichanlandtrust.ca.

Motorized Wheelchairs on Public Roads

The question was raised as to what side of the road motorized wheelchairs, or other medical motorized vehicles should drive on, and whether the drivers are required to wear helmets.  The answer is that they should follow the same rules as pedestrians, driving close to the curb on the left, facing the traffic. Helmets are not specified. Further details can be found at:

Thetis Island Fire Ban ~ Midnight July 5th

Thetis Island will be under a complete fire ban as of midnight Wednesday July 5th, 2017.  No further campfire permits will be issued.

Prohibited fires:

  • ·      campfires
  • ·      fires burning woody debris in outdoor stoves or fireplaces
  • ·      the use of tiki torches, fireworks, firecrackers, sky lanterns, burning barrels or burning cages of any        size or description
  • ·      the use of binary exploding targets (e.g. for rifle target practice)

Propane campfire appliances with CSA approved labels will continue to be allowed during this ban.

This prohibition will remain in effect on Thetis Island until October 31st or until further notification.

Scottish Country Dancing

The Thetis Island Scottish Country Dance Group cordially invites interested participants to attend a "Taste and See" session Wednesday July 5th, 4pm at the Community Hall. We would like to introduce attendees to some of the beginner steps and routines that are comprised in this very healthy mental and physical exercise. Go to link

https://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0ahUKEwj3hf74hePUAhVDzGMKHSkpATYQFggmMAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rscds.org%2Fdocument%2F852&usg=AFQjCNEMOXjd3-38tLXN-cKe14aRbZqXLQ&cad=rja

which gives a very good description of the health benefits associated and also go to

http://scottishcountrydancingdictionary.com

 to view some YouTube videos.

You can bring a partner but you do not have to have one; soft shoes and light clothing are advised. Be prepared for a good laugh, we are not terribly serious and most of us are past our "best before" date. However, all ages from mid teens to oldies are very welcome.
