TIVFD ~ Coastal Fire Centre info

The Coastal Fire Centre has now also gone to open fire burn prohibitions except for campfires. This may be of interest to those who camp or  travel. Thetis Island shut down open burning (excluding campfires) on May 15th.

Thetis Island will most likely open up to yard waste pile burning on November 1 unless it is still dry.

Please report any smoke columns, especially in the daytime, to 911. Small evening attended campfires are still being allowed at this time.  Watch your sparks and use twice the amount of water you think you need to extinguish it.

This is shaping up to be a very dry season.

Baking for Nepal

Thanks to the many people who took me up on my offer of baking in exchange for donations to the Canadian Red Cross for Nepal.  I was happy to take on this project, and thrilled with the results.  After baking many, many loaves of bread, pies, cakes, cinnamon buns, butterhorns, scones, muffins, and cookies, we were able to raise $1,375.00

Again, thank you for your generosity

May 30th Mosquito Meeting Prep: Wanted ~ Volunteers

The TIRRA executive has been gathering information in preparation for the May 30th SPECIAL MEETING at 3pm.  One of the issues before us is to determine what level of volunteer commitment there MIGHT be to actually implement a Pest Management Plan if the membership decided to vote in favour of such a plan.

I suggested that a simple e-spokes poll could provide some sort of indication.  Without going into too much detail, here is what is being asked:

Would you consider volunteering say two mornings a month for approx 4 months, (ie 8 times), during the spring/summer to participate in sampling for larvae and spreading a safe larvacide (Vectobac) in our attempt to better manage our significant mosquito population? Would you be likely to volunteer for a few years?

I will accept your reply by e-mail and any comments you may have.  You might rather volunteer a morning every week if you feel strongly about the problem.  The general response will be part of the May 30th meeting but no names will be given. It is also possible that the membership will not vote in favour of the Association being involved in mosquito mitigation.

It would be helpful to reply by noon on the 29th to:

thetis@island.net

with thanks,

Ernie Hunter
