The Impact of Tsilhqot'in Nation v. BC

Greetings Islanders, I just received a link to the UVIC Law department event of September 25th, "Aboriginal Title and Provincial Regulation: The Impact of Tsilhqot'in Nation v. BC"

You may view this video on YouTube by clicking here.

This event happened coincidental while we (the Islands Trust executive committee) were at UBCM last week.

Some of us had the opportunity to hear Chief Roger William, Xeni Gwet'in first nation, Chief Percy Guichon and Gregg Cockrill a lawyer with Young Anderson who spoke to the significance of this historic decision.

Both Chief William and Chief Guichon spoke about the path forward as an opportunity to work together and build new relationships. They indicated that this was the first step to reconciliation as it confirms First Nations rightful place in the governance of it's territories. The generosity and sincerity of the offer to work together was inspiring.

Although the UVic presentation is 2 hours I think you will find it worth while as it really helps to come to understand this significant decision.

So get yourself a tea or beverage a comfy chair and have a listen.

European Fire Ants Info ~

There is an increasing concern regarding European Fire Ants spreading to the gulf islands and we did have a reported case here last year.

I have posted this document around the island to increase awareness, you can find an electronic copy at the link below for your reading enjoyment or to circulate to you gardening friends elsewhere, click here to view the PDF.

Happy gardening
