Proposed Lower Burchell Hill Nature Reserve & your Taxes

We at the Thetis Island Nature Conservancy (ThINC) would like to share some information in response to recent
questions regarding how your taxes would be affected by the proposed acquisition of the Lower Burchell Hill Nature Reserve.

As outlined in our project  information available at www.thetisislandnatureconservancy.org, and posted at various locations on the island, once funding is in place and the acquisition has been finalized, the title will be held by the Islands Trust Fund (ITF). This means there will no longer be taxes due on the land. ThINC will establish a management plan in partnership with the community. The plan is for the reserve to be a low impact nature reserve. No camping, no trailer parks.

There will be minimal costs for the yearly management of the reserve, and those costs will be covered by ITF which gathers its funds from throughout the Trust area. There will be no tax increase specific to Thetis Island. Average annual costs covered by ITF’s base budget ranges from $300 for monitoring to up to $1.5k -$2k if, for example, fencing was needed or invasive species removed. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch with us at ThINC@thetisisland.net or to contact Jennifer Eliason at 250-405-5191 or jeliason@islandstrust.bc.ca.

Ongoing Telus Hi-Speed Complaint

Three days ago I filed yet another complaint with the CCTS, File # 0500586 (S. Frankel), as well as with the CRTC, Case# I.D. 681401.

I have Ccd Jean Crowder our MP was copied as well as Mel Dorey, our Area G Director and Representative

I had decided to "reignite" our issues/complaints concerning TELUS and their refusal to install Hi-Speed upgrades to our lines. This action comes on the heels of TELUS cutting of their Dial-Up phone (service) connection to Uniserve our Internet provider.

Uniserve is attempting address the issue VIA technical intervention.

Mel Dorey has been very supportive and immediately responded to our request for support and assistance from our CVRD. In a phone conversation with Mr. Dorey today, he advised me he is attempting to set-up a meeting with the; "higher ups at TELUS" to at least get a face to face dialogue on the main issues concerning Hi-Speed access. We are also hoping that Island's Trust will lend their support to us for this issue.

I must admit, after years of this on-going debate with TELUS, I am not totally optimistic anything much will come of it. Having said that, at least our CVRD Representative is attempting another avenue of support.

In addition, I have been advised by very reliable sources that TELUS is starting to provide Hi-Speed access to small rural communities in Alberta

Heavy Ferry Traffic ~ Pioneer Pacific Renos

Hello fellow Islanders,

As many of you know, Pioneer Pacific Camp is in the process of rebuilding our main kitchen and dining hall.  As you can imagine this is a lengthy process with a lot of moving parts.  We would like to ask for your continued patience with the many evidences of this project such as noise and increased ferry traffic.

We are doing our best to have the bulk of the ferrying completed before the MV Kuper is out of commission.  Within the next two weeks we will be pouring the footings and foundation which will require a fair number of cement trucks, possibly causing congestion with the ferry.  Again we ask for your patience with us during this process and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

We are excited for this much needed improvement to our site and look forward to sharing this new building with you in the future.

Thanks!
