Yoga Cancelled ~ February 3rd

YOGA CANCELLED FEB. 3

Unfortunately there is a conflict with another event for this same day and to make life simpler for all of the Island Trust representatives, we are going to cancel the yoga class on Tuesday, February 3rd for 9:30 to 10:45.  So do your off island running about and come on out for Thursday’s class.  Then be back if you have an interest in the Senior’s – Elder Care meeting at 1:00 in the hall too.

See you all tomorrow.  Lovin’ the warm, blue skies.

Warmly, Dawn Gordon

St. Margarets Cemetery Work Day ~ Thanks

A big thank you to all those who came out to work in the new cemetery area: Claude Leger, Wayne Loiselle, Pam Lee, Nan Beals, Rod and Myrna Brownlee, Dave Steen, Joan and Dave Smirl, Vicki Walker, Wendy and Glen Andison, and Gurk Sarioglu.

A tip of the hat to the young men from Capernwray who also came to move mulch.

It was back breaking work digging out blackberry roots, cleaning up ditches and levelling mounds of soil. Thanks to your efforts we are making progress towards creating a new green cemetery space which is going to be beautiful!

Parking at Forbes Hall for Gwen's Celebration of Life

There are several hundred people expected to attend Gwen's Memorial on Saturday. Parking by the hall will be restricted to the Hunter Family, the very elderly, and those with mobility problems. We ask that you drop off you passengers or baking and park on Mission Road or North Cove Road by the school and walk back. There will be traffic control persons to direct you.
We are expecting severe rain on Saturday so be prepared for your short walk.

Thank you.  TIVFD Traffic Auxiliary

Last Details for Gwen's Celebration of Life

Seating: We expect more people to attend the service than Forbes Hall can accommodate so please be prepared in case you have to listen to the service from the library or outside.  Tents will be set up with a sound system.

The first few rows in the hall will be marked and reserved for family members.

Food:  Change of plans.  If you are bringing food, we would appreciate it if you could drop it off between 10:00 and 12:00 Saturday morning so we can finish arranging larger platters before everyone arrives.  If you bring it when you come, please drop it off at the side door near the library to leave the main entrance with less traffic.  If you are wondering if we still need more food, the answer is YES!  Just bring along a sweet or savory of your choice.  Thank you!

Cards and guest books:  A table will be set up on the patio by the front doors under a tent and there will be a basket for cards.  There will also be 2 guest books for everyone to sign and just so you can be a little prepared, there is a space to write a memory or an encouraging word beside your name.

Parking: Parking is going to be a challenge as we are expecting 300 to 500 people so please car pool with a neighbor if possible and leave the area closest to the hall for family, guests from out of town and our seniors.  Fire department members will assist you in angle parking on Mission Road and by the school.

Time: Starting time is 1:30 this Saturday, January 24th

Thank you to everyone for your cooperation and your willing hearts and hands.  I appreciate all the support.

Lynn Hunter

Scooter for Sale

Yamaha 49cc Vino scooter for sale.  Was vandalized six years ago and suffered heavy body damage but the motor is good.
No motorcycle license required for these little scoots, a class 5 works just fine.  Could be a good way to get around the island if you're handy and willing to buy some parts.  It needs a new seat, some new body panels and rear light assembly.

A Cave to Valdez?

Ever since I was a young child I've heard of this cave.  Jo Ateah told me at great length once about a young woman who thought she'd found it.

Every summer growing up, we'd "do" the caves.  It all stopped one year, when we realized (probably Dad & Pat Hayward rather than us kids), that the rocks had shifted, and we could no longer go through number Seven, coming out through number 8.  After that we started thinking about what might happen if those rocks shifted when we were in the caves.  Consequently they lost their allure.

So it was with real interest that I read the following article.  The chasm outside of the caves is a beautiful, cool place to sit on a hot summer's day, but you'll never see me going into the caves again.  The last I heard the caves belong to the Nature Conservancy of Canada and are looked after by VIU as a protected habitat for a species of long-eared bats.

Discussion about Home & Community Care on Thetis Island

Thursday, February 5th from 2 pm – 3 pm at Forbes Hall.

Over the years, Thetis Island residents have discussed the need for ongoing health care on the island.  At present, there is none (except flu shot clinic) and it is not within VIHA’s present plans to expand their services.

Yet, with some form of local assistance, aging residents and those with other health issues could choose to remain in their homes without moving off the island to access those services. Ultimately, other local health-related services could be offered as identified and needed.

To continue the discussion, you are invited to this “rekindling” one hour meeting to:

1.       Hear what has been done to date.

2.       Discuss local health-related needs and possible solutions.

3.       Identify a do-able plan of action for the next few months.

If you are unable to attend but want to participate in the ongoing discussion, please send your thoughts and comments to ckasting@telus.net

Special thanks to our MC for the evening, Gerry Smith, for a job well done.
