Mosquitoes ~ Discussion

For many years, Bob Davies & Roy Pickford managed the slough gate, at the culvert by Roy Holloway's, to prevent the salt marsh from flooding on the highest tides of the summer.  It was on the ocean side of the culvert.  We rarely have mosquitoes at our place, as the updraft seems to keep them down in the valley towards the slough. However, this year we are inundated!  We even went so far as to purchase repellant!

.....
Mosquitoes have been an issue for me all over the Island including Forbes Hall both indoors and out at all hours--this year!
Thanks, Pat, for discussing the problem.
Claire Hess

.....

In 20+ years of living on Thetis Island we’ve never seen the dusty, grey salt marsh mosquitoes as bad as they are this year.

We’ve even had to stop our morning walks with the dog as she becomes surrounded by a cloud of them.  I seem to remember years ago when there was a surge in the population that something was adjusted to a flapper valve on the culvert that goes under the road from the slough.  Exactly what this was about, I have no idea.  Does this ring a bell with anyone?
Does anyone know what to do to make the situation more bearable?
Sure hope someone remembers!
