Stewarding Our Shores

Please join us for:

"Stewarding Our Shores" a Special peakers Evening

Thursday, Aug. 8, at Overbury Resort's Pavilion, 288 Forbes Road, 6:30-8:30 PM.

Hosted by your Thetis Island Local Trust Committee.

Our distinguished speakers are:

John Readshaw, P. Eng: "A Coastal Engineer's Look at Expected Sea Level Rise"

Ramona de Graaf, MSc.: "Not Just Another Pretty Beach: Marine Shorelines as Critical Fish Habitats"

Thetis Island Nature Conservancy: "Stewardship of Thetis' Natural Ecosystems"

We have planned time for Q and A along with general discussion and look forward to hearing from our community. We hope to engage our "summer neighbours" as well as our year-round neighbours - especially those who own waterfront properties. We can better steward our island when we understand the natural dynamics of the land and sea. To that end we present this third Shoreline Workshop.

Since the Community Centre will be setting up for the wonderful Summer Soiree and Art Auction, Arlene and Norm Kasting graciously offered the use of their beautiful Overbury Resort Pavilion for our evening workshop. Parking will be on Forbes Road with a walk down the driveway and across the lawn to the pavilion - anyone with mobility issues will be able to park or be dropped at the bottom of the driveway. Refreshments will be served.

We look forward to seeing you on Thursday evening, Aug. 8th.

Sincerely,

Trustees Ken, Peter, Sue, and Planner Aleksandra

Garage Door Torsion Spring

We have a torsion spring for a garage door left over from a project.  My understanding is that it can be dangerous to handle due to the tension in the spring.  I'm looking for a way to dispose of it safely, so please let me know if you have any tips.

Thanks,

Lives Behind the Headstones

St. Margaret’s Cemetery Board extends a big thank you to the Thetis Island community for coming out to celebrate the launch of the 20th Anniversary edition of The Lives Behind the Headstones and to honour Sheila Kelsey the editor and spirit behind the book. About 60 people attended the tea on Sunday afternoon July 14 at Forbes Hall. Sheila, our guest of honour greeted and signed over 65 copies of the book 53 of which were sold and the rest given as gifts to members of the community who helped with the production of the book, as well as to those who have served the cemetery in various ways through out the years. Special thanks to the Thetis Island Historical and Cultural Society for their donation which facilitated the republishing of the book; to Merry Gooding for her wonderful flowers; to Chocolate Lilies catering and to all those who helped out set up and take down the hall. Special kudos to Janice Young who initiated this event and who spent many long hours working with the Liz Traer at Copycats Printing & Design and collaborating with the Board getting this edition prepared.  The 20th Anniversary edition of Lives Behind the Headstones, now digitally enhanced with many added colour features, is presently available for purchase at the Post Office, with other outlets coming soon.

Congratulations to Sheila Kelsey, Janice Young, Simone Luckham and Suzanne Sarioglu for the successful launch of the 20th Anniversary Edition of Lives Behind the Headstones.

Thanks Den Kelsey for these photos.

Saturday Community Fair

Our first opening had only a few vendors, but those vendors made just under $500 collectively!  There were many folks that dropped by for a little something from the busy take out café, and then browsed through the wares offered for sale.  Many people just happened to be driving or walking by and stopped in for a visit & a looksee.

So, if you want to join us next Saturday, and Saturdays beyond, just turn up at Forbes Hall in time to be set up by 10AM, with whatever you want to sell or showcase, and we’ll give you a site to sell from.

Looking forward to seeing you at next Saturday’s Community Fair ~ Forbes Hall ~ 10AM thru 1PM.
