Sunday, May 12, 2013 at 6:03PM I would like to bring readers' attention to an author who I think is well worth reading. She is Donna Leon and writes the Commissario Brunetti mystery series. She lived in Venice for 25 years and seems to have a very interesting view of Italian politics (frightening!).
The books are well-written and rather low key so do not feature the nasty and brutish murders of many other modern mystery books. It took me a couple of books to get hooked ..but I'm hooked! Please keep them in mind.

Sunday, May 12, 2013 at 12:32PM Several years ago, Barbara Williamson instigated an award to recognize women in our community that go above and beyond with volunteering. These women don't need to be at the forefront, in fact most work quietly behind the scenes.
We are happy to announce that this year's recipient is Gloria Taylor, for always stepping in when an extra set of hands is needed, or when an event needs to be pulled off. Thanks, Gloria, for all you do for our community.
Past recipients surprised Gloria with a lovely bouquet of roses, a lemon-coconut chiffon cake and a couple of bottles of bubbly, accompanying the pair of crystal candlesticks, which will be gracing Gloria's table for the next year. Past recipients: Shirley Burr, Cecilia Inness, Petra Accipiter, Lynn Hunter, Veronica Shelford, Sue French (missing from photo), Ann Dickie & Simone Luckham (missing from photo).
Friday, May 10, 2013 at 11:30PM Jollity Farm wants to create a pedal powered salad spinner using an old stationary bike and washing machine.
We are short on time and expertise and would love to have a passionate islander give us a hand to bring this project to life.
Please call Elisabeth or Noah Bond at 250.416.6736 or email info@jollityfarm.ca
