Restoration of Bull Kelp

Kelp in the Salish Sea (and around the world) are in decline.  As kelp supports many fish and invertebrates, restoration of kelp could contribute to healthy marine ecosystems.  A group of Thetis Island volunteers, in collaboration with Ocean Wise Conservation Association and Canadian Kelp Resources, is pursuing a small aquaculture lease to attempt to restore bull kelp around Fraser point, Thetis Island.  Please find attached our official notice to the public of this project, including opportunities to comment.

April 1 Fire Permits

All outdoor fires (campfires included) will require a Fire Permit from the TIVFD at thetisislandfire.ca on April 1st to October 31st.

All yard waste fire setters are required to check the Venting Index prior to lighting their fire and only light the fire on a GOOD Venting Index day. This is a Provincial requirement from the Ministry of Environment and is applicable year-round.

Yard waste burn piles may be prohibited earlier than in past years. Already the Cariboo Fire District has banned outdoor Category 2 & 3 fires and there is an out of control fire at Lumby due to a back yard burn that escaped.

As I write this e-Spokes (Monday at 1:20 pm) the Municipality of North Cowichan is responding to a serious bush fire.

Please be safe, have your water source and tools at your yard waste site and do not leave your fire unattended. If possible, chip your coarse woody debris instead of burning.

Thank you.

Pierre Perreault

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of dear friend and long-time Thetis Islander Pierre Perreault. Pierre passed away quietly after a yearlong illness on March 11 with Kim by his side. He was a man of many talents : master coffee roaster at Pot of Gold Coffee, marine mechanic, builder, avid fisherman and musician. As a devout Jehovah Witness, he could often be seen fulfilling his mission on a corner somewhere in the community. He is survived by his wife Kim, sons Cylus and Eric daughters Alisha and Julie.

Pierre's Memorial will be at the Kingdom Hall in Cobble Hill.
April 13th
2:00 PM
There will be a 'tea' at the same location following the memorial.

ThINC - Big thanks for all your help!

A huge thank you to all who helped out at this past weekend’s invasive species pull at Fairyslipper Forest, as well as to those who lent their weed pulling implements! We successfully removed the remainder of the holly that was in the Nature Reserve (well, perhaps a few sneaky plants remain) and continued to keep the worst of the Scotch broom at bay.

Managing invasive species on your property is not only important for supporting local biodiversity and healthy ecosystems but also helps to reduce the fire risk as many invasive plants are highly flammable and can exacerbate fires by creating abnormal increases that buildup in the understory.

To help protect the Nature Reserve from the encroachment of invasive species, we encourage neighbouring properties to manage and monitor invasive species on their property.

Here’s our post from last year that provides some details on how you can deal with English holly on your property:
https://www.thetisislandnatureconservancy.org/single-post/fairyslipper-forest-reserve-is-due-for-its-pre-spring-cleaning-march-11th-and-12th

And from our broom bash two years ago: https://www.thetisislandnatureconservancy.org/single-post/battling-broom

Thanks once again and happy spring!

Summer Market!

Can you believe that we’re only a couple of months away from Summer Market? It’s time to start thinking about taking part in the market at the head of Telegraph Harbour. Do you enjoy craft work? Do you have a skill that you could make a bit of money from to support your pastime? We’d love to have you join us.

We’ll be holding a meeting on April 19th at the Community Centre from 11 to 12 for all who are thinking about joining, but in the meantime, you can get busy making more things for your stall.

Want more information? You can contact Chris Pegg at cpegg@telus.net or Pat English at puzzlnut@telus.net
