Lost & Found at Forbes Hall

When an item is found at Forbes Hall, please leave it in the entry coat racks  – hanging if able, and on the shelf above, if not.

When looking for an item you have forgotten at Forbes Hall, look in the entry coat racks – either hanging or on the shelf above.

After a month or so, we may post that the article is there for pick up, and if it continues its residency at Forbes Hall, it will be taken to the thrift store for a new life.

Thanks

What to Do with Plastic and Other Stuff ??

Actually, really do recycling - or continue the 'out of sight out of mind' strategy...

Well this out of mind strategy (world-wide very popular too!) is at least an easy and good way to leave it up to the next generation dealing with it...not only with recycling (I just can only shake my head!!)

So it got quiet about recycling on Thetis!! Seems plastic and recycling is already forgotten .... >> 'out of sight out of mind' strategy. Like the fairy tale of our local/provincial/federal plastic recycling system.

A tiny fraction of recycled plastic today is and will be recycled at the end. Fact is the most plastic end up in a landfill or incinerator or check the coastline we get the exported all floating back! And the plastic of Thetis is no exception.

Well after attending once a Thetis recycling meeting.... and people looked like as if I am totally out of this world after I suggested we should do something and recycle plastic here on Thetis. Well I learned it is better to do my own recycling instead of waiting or convincing others or even passing the responsibility on to 'BINGS CREEK RECYCLING CENTRE'. That's why I bought my own shredder.

I like 'the less talking more doing' way!!

Nevertheless it is no magic to recycle like PP, PE, HDPE plastic and do some useful things with it. Something Thetis unique - would bring some $$ for our hall too. And what to do with recycled plastic...the sky is the limit. More people especially young people world wide have understood this and do something instead of talking. Here a link I would like to share.

https://www.preciousplastic.com/solutions/prods

https://community.preciousplastic.com/how-to?category=Products

For me my PP, PE, HDPE recycling is coming but in a 'one man show' first things first.

By the way my Styrofoam recycling/shredding is in 'continuous operation' and we used up the first big bags full of our shredded Styrofoam balls for insulation projects'. Worked very well!! The next load will be shredded in the next days. If you like to do your part and take responsibility(instead to pass it on to BINGS CREEK) break the Styrofoam in hand size pieces so it fit easily in my shredder and we can use it. But please call/text/email before you drop anything off. Some times all my storage container are filled up.

AND another thing - since composting from wood waste/twigs and branches seems impossible to many on Thetis. I don't know why - everyone has enough room for a compost pile!?! And time to do too!!

Well my 'this year goal' is to make our own wood pellets --- beside this still ongoing house building thing hopefully without more obstacles :)

So not only making compost is a solution for wood waste. I run chips/twigs and branches through my small hammer-mill and press wood pellets(with my own small wood pellet mill) out of it. I use them for our wood-pellet-boiler (controlled burning/combustion for heating and warm water for our house without throwing a bunch of wood in a stove and hope for a good combustion). And I don't like to sponsor BCHydro for unreliable power for a heat pump. When all is set and running well (when the weather does more nice!!) I may can start and even take more than our own twigs and branches etc. But I'll post it!! In the meantime collect some, cut it in 2 to 3' length, stack it and save the time to do a 'Bings Creek run'. There is always something everyone can do.

To contact me see phone book!

Thanks,

Matthias

Do Healthy Women Experience the Winter Blues?

A new scientific study says, YUP!

In addition to e-Spokes volunteer, my day job is human biologist, especially the ways in which women's bodies and minds respond to changes in environmental and social conditions.

My most recent work was in Iceland, where my team collected daily data from healthy women on 4 measures (mood, mental sharpness, social support, physical health) in summer (when the sun "never sets") and winter (when the sun just barely rises).

Scores on these 4 measures were significantly better in summer than winter.  These are the strongest data so far to show the effects of shorter daylight on women's well-being.  It's very likely the same impacts occur in men and, to a lesser extent, at lower latitudes.

So, if the winter blues are getting you down, get some rays (comfy chair in a sunny window, walking at the noon-ish hours) and know that spring is just 40 days away :)

School Invitation

TIES is looking for seniors in the community who would like to spend an hour, one afternoon per month (on Thursdays), with our students at the community centre.

We thought we would take the opportunity for the young and the not-so-young to mingle, chat, and play games. We have chess, battleship, scrabble, and a few others; we welcome other game ideas and also thought it might be a good opportunity to teach some of the kids to play Cribbage.

If interested, please email Ms. Lucchetti: slucchetti@sd79.bc.ca. We hope to start sometime in February.
