PAG - Plant of the Week #26 - Plantain (Ribwort & Broadleaf)

In our second to last Plant of the Week posting for the season, we have a double whammy.

A great foodstuff, plantain packs a nutritious punch yielding many vitamins and minerals. Their leaves can be eaten raw or cooked, and their seeds can be used in soups.

In addition to their edibility, they have also been used for their medicinal properties by both Europeans and First Nations alike. Commonly found all over Thetis (and now much of the world!), they are surprisingly not native. They have been around since the arrival of the first European settlers and are now considered naturalized.

In the book, Braiding Sweetgrass, Robin Wall Kimmerer refers to them as “White Man’s Footstep”:

“Our people have a name for this round-leafed plant: White Man’s Footstep. Just a low circle of leaves, pressed close to the ground with no stem to speak of, it arrived with the first settlers and followed them everywhere they went. It trotted along paths through the woods, along wagon roads and railroads, like a faithful dog so as to be near them.”

The Equinox: The Sun on Sunday

This year the September equinox ("fall equinox" in the Northern Hemisphere) is at 5:44am Sunday, 22 September.

Among other things, this means that today, everywhere on the Earth, the Sun is above the horizon for almost exactly 12 hours, sunrise happens almost exactly due East (90 degrees compass course), and sunset happens almost exactly due West (270 degrees compass course). The local times of sunrise and sunset vary from place to place.

The only exceptions are at the North pole (where the Sun is just setting today, and will stay below the horizon for the next 6 months), and at the South pole (where the Sun is just rising today, and will stay above the horizon for the next    6 months).

The underlying reason for all these phenomena is that the Earth spins (daily) about an axis that's tilted relative to the Earth's orbit around the Sun.

The Spring and Fall Equinoxes are the times each year when the Earth's position in its (yearly) orbit around the Sun places that tilt precisely "sideways" relative to the Sun.

There's a more detailed explanation, with a nice animation, at

ThINC - September Issue of The Ripple

Albeit a quieter summer, ThINC hosted several events, including community science activities, gatherings at the People's Apothecary Garden, and workshops and presentations led by members of the community as well as visitors.

This issue of The Ripple touches on two of our summer events: sea star monitoring and a book launch.

Andy Lamb shares his observations and expert take on sea star wasting disease.

And Ann Eriksson provides an uplifting review of author and environmental advocate Sheila Harrington's recent book: Voices for the Islands: Thirty Years of Nature Conservation on the Salish Sea.

Pick-up on Salt Spring Island

Hi...

If anyone is going to Salt Spring Island, I have a small cobbler’s bench that needs picking up.

I would be most grateful if someone who is going there could do that for me.

Stamps for BC Cancer Society

I would like to thank all the Thetis Islander folk who are putting their used postage stamps in the wooden box (which was kindly donated by Heather Hunter) on the table at the mail pick up area.

These stamps go to the BC Cancer Society to help fund their ongoing support of BC cancer patients and are greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Terry Harvey
